The Phone will never die.

Posted on

Much has been written about the death of the phone – other channels of communication such as email and social media have for several decades now supposed to be relegating phone calls into the past but – the Phone will never die.

And yet, last year as the pandemic hit, call volumes across the UK were up 27% compared to the previous year. And that’s just calls over the telephone network – it excludes the billions of minutes of calls made over Skype/FaceTime/WhatsApp/et all.

Whilst numbers aren’t public for WhatsApp usage, as far back as 2018 over 2 billion minutes per day were being spent talking on the app. That number will be a magnitude of that now – Microsoft for example announced recently their Teams product is handling over 5 billion minutes per day and has around 150 million users versus WhatsApps’ 2 billion users.

These aren’t just rising because of the pandemic either – the truth is nothing beats the immediacy of picking up the phone and speaking to someone. It’s also a clear signal for trust. If you’re visiting a website that has no numbers, do you trust making a large purchase, or do you want that comfort of knowing if something goes wrong you have someone to call.
